Not much to report. I’m beginning to realize what it is that makes me not like this show as much as normal Yu-Gi-Oh!. The plot is significantly simpler, less interesting, less complex. Now, I’m by no means giving up, because I acknowledge that Duelist Kingdom, too, started slightly faster but still quite slow, kind of a duel-of-the-week/day/whatever, I wasn’t there for the start of it all thing, that became gradually more complex. I’m sure that GX is just getting warmed up. But the fact remains that it is remaining kind of an anti-anticipatable random adventure thing. Random adventures are not much in Yu-Gi-Oh! style, or at least, not usually. There are exceptions, of course, like the first couple duels of Duelist Kingdom and Battle City, and the time between Duelist Kingdom and Battle City. I’m sure that GX will pick up, and I sure hope so, because there’s really nothing I can do except make observations; it’s really getting annoying.
Now, the nature of the Sandwich Draw: I don’t think that Ms. Dorothy is the cafeteria lady, because we already know that each Dorm has their own meal hall (because Jaden and Syrus were so excited when Bastion let them eat at the Ra dorm because the Ra dorm has better food). Rather, I think that her sandwich drawing is an entirely separate matter, run out of the card shop. We also discovered that the card shop is located in the main building when they run outside chasing Damon.
Another wacky Obelisk Blue. Those guys are either too proud or too hard on themselves (or else just plain stupid). The too proud, I can understand and I’ve ranted about earlier. But the too hard on themselves I can also relate to. One such was Damon, and such another truly was Chazz. That’s one of the reasons he left (have I ever dissected that? There are a lot of solid reasons why he ran away). If everyone calls you the best, like if you’re in the best Dorm, say, then that’s a lot of pressure. They expect you to be the best, and if you’re not, you’re just a failure. They thought you were something special but they were disappointed. That’s a lot of pressure, and on top of that *you* expect yourself to be the best. If you’re not, then they were wrong about you, you’re just another loser. You didn’t try hard enough, you weren’t good enough. And moreover, some of these Obelisks (again, like Chazz) aced dueling prep school and all. They’re used to being the best, so if they turn around and they start losing/flunking left and right, then what happened? Did they just lose their touch? Are they becoming a different person? Do they even care anymore, are they just staying in it because everyone expects them to? Is that why they’re failing? Because they don’t care? It’s not easy being supposedly the best duelist/student on campus, or even one of them. I guess I’ve been judging the Obelisks a bit harshly. But still, it’s *okay* if you can’t win ‘em all! I still don’t know what it is they need, though; I guess I’m too close to the problem, because I’m not kidding when I say I can relate.
Is there a ‘nature of the Draw?’ Is there a way to improve one’s skill at drawing something randomly? In theory, no, because it’s random, but I do agree with what Jaden said that in dueling it’s not necessarily about drawing what you want, it’s about wanting what you draw, as it were. Jaden trusts his gut to tell him what he’ll draw next, and plans his strategy with that in mind. This wouldn’t be the case with the Eggwich, though. That’s just luck of the draw, and Jaden seems to be very lucky indeed, but many duelists we know are uncanny that way because they believe that the Heart and/or the Draw will come through for them. I guess you could perhaps say that the Nature of the Draw is a bit like the Heart of the Cards. But is it possible to become so adept at picking the right card/sandwich/pastry/you-name-it that you automatically do? In our world, probably not, but keep in mind that Yu-Gi-Oh! is fictional, and therefore exists in a similar world to ours but with a different set of rules to play by. Maybe there there *is* such a thing as the Nature of the Draw there.
There it is. It’s not much and it’s way late, but as always feel free to discuss, correct, or anything else. Tomorrow’s episode will be: King of the Copycats I! Yay! A multi-parter! Something to anticipate the sequel of! Until then, that’s all, folks. -Clio |
