Passion. It lies in us, sleeps,
And shun it though try we, it stirs,
And it wakes and it loves and it weeps,
It howls and it whispers...
And we listen, for we can't but obey.
Passion. Our wellspring of power:
Healing and suffering, the same.
The promise of burning red flower,
Love becomes pain...
For a passionate heart's easy prey.
Passion. It binds us together,
For lonely, what are we but doomed?
Duty is too weak a tether
To suffer such wounds...
And together we face one more day.

Background: This is based on the 29th episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Passion." Mostly it's based on a single quote: "Passion. It lies in all of us; sleeping, waiting. And though unwanted, unbidden, it will stir, open its jaws, and howl. It speaks to us, guides us. Passion rules us all. And we obey; what other choice do we have?... Passion is the source of our finest moments; the joy of love, the clarity of hatred, and the ecstasy of grief... If we could live without passion, maybe we'd know some kinda peace. But we would be hollow. Empty rooms, shuttered and dank. Without passion, we would be truly dead." In this episode, Angelus continues to mess with Buffy, as completely obsessed with hurting her as he once was with loving her. Giles, in his role as the stuffy Watcher, tells Buffy to shrug it off; as the Slayer, she can't let her feelings interfere with her work. However, he doesn't take his own advice when Angelus murders Jenny before she can perform the spell to restore his soul, and leaves her corpse for him to find instead of her loving embrace. Buffy goes after him, just in time to save his life, and berates him for almost getting himself killed; she can't do this alone. The bond between Watcher and Slayer deepens beyond mere duty, and Buffy believes, by the end of the episode, she has found the strength to confront Angelus. |
