For The State of Syrus

Get tough and stop your crying,
Play hard and don't give in.
Don't take the road I've taken,
Don't lose it all to win.
You're meant for something better
Than my dark and lonely fate;
My legacy's your future,
And my hour's growing late.
Heed your wistful dreaming,
Make a stand and make it well.
Don't forget how much I love you.
You have the strength: Farewell.

Background:

Despite my unfair bias towards Zane Truesdale, this is the only poem I've yet written for him. The title ended up being a pun on the episode that inspired its creation, The State of Syrus (ep#137), and another very important episode for the Truesdale brothers, For the Sake of Syrus (ep#008). I'm still trying to twig quite what the deal is with Zane these days; he seems to have mellowed out after the psychopathetic rampage that was Year 2, but why, who knows. In his conversation with Syrus in this episode, it seemed to me that Zane had come for something else, but seeing what a state Syrus was in over Jaden (talking in his sleep...), decided instead to do what he could for Syrus to let him get what would make him happy; Zane decided that Jaden was more important to Syrus than he, himself, would be: "Yeah, but... he said 'buddy', so he's not asking for me." And Zane also revealed to us that his heart was running out of time. There was one other thing that he needed to do, but this was on the list. It reminded me of another time Zane put Syrus before himself, and that was Field of Screams II (ep#032): "I did say that (you didn't belong here), Syrus, but since then, you proved me wrong. You *do* belong here...I love you, Syrus. Never forget it...I'll miss you, little bro; farewell."
