Make Your Own Team 5D's Pin

Straight from the top, my usual disclaimer: I do not own Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's, at all, and all of this is unofficial, without any kind of permission, and purely for fun.

Backpack with T5D's Pin

The World Racing Grand Prix is here, and we all want to show our colors. I made a Team 5D's pin for my backpack, and what follows are directions for you to make one, too.

You Will Need:

  • Navy blue felt
  • White felt
  • Red felt
  • Yellow felt
  • Fabric glue
  • Needle and thread
  • Pin backing - see step 5
  • Pen
  • Scissors
  • A printed copy of the makeshift pattern below - you may want to print in greyscale.

5D's logo

1) Cut the whole badge out of your pattern, and trace it, face-down, onto your navy blue felt.

2) Cut the white quadrangle with the 5D's on it out of the shape you first cut out, then separately cut out the yellow wing design. Trace the former onto your white felt, face down, and the latter onto your yellow felt, face down.

3) Then, cut the 5D's itself out of the paper shape you traced onto the white-- very carefully. You may want to cut through the side of the D to make it easier to cut precisely; remember that you just need this for tracing. You should end up with three pieces: the 5 with a long top that comes down to make the ', the D, and the s. Trace these onto your red felt, face down.

4) Now cut the pieces you traced out of the felt. The pen marks, if any remain after you cut them out, are on the backs of them and won't show on your finished badge.

5) Now you will attach the back of your pin, that will let you pin it to things. Pin backings, designed just for projects like this, are avalable at most craft and fabric stores. Sew the backing of the pin onto the middle of the pen-marked side of your navy felt piece. Make sure that the stitches will be hidden when you glue on the white quadrangle later by placing it slightly off-center.

6) Now it's time to glue it all together. Before you pull out the glue, try placing the felt pieces together and seeing how everything fits. Make sure everything is the right way around, with the pen on the back. First you'll glue the white and the yellow onto the navy, then the red on top of the white. Be careful with the red; it's easy for it to bend out of alignment.

7) Let it dry overnight before pinning it to anything...

I've also been making pins of the other WRGP logos, by re-creating the logos I see onscreen--

UnicornTeam Unicorn - You'll only need white felt to make this one. Careful with the white felt, though; if any stray pen marks happen, they're hard to cover up. I recommend two layers of white felt to give the badge enough stiffness; I made one slightly smaller than the other so they have a beveling effect. I cut out the eye with great difficulty and added some black fabric paint.

Catastrophe

Team Catastrophe - This one was tricky to find onscreen. One good place to see it was the armband changeover from Herman to Nicholas. And it was trickier to make, by the way. Especially the C. Watch out for tiny pieces; they're trickier than they look. You'll need purple, green, and maroon.I recommend two layers of purple to give the badge enough stiffness not to flop around.

Ragnarok

Team Ragnarok - This one's fun. You'll need two copies of the pattern: one for the backing, the yellow, and the purple, then one for the big red R. Cut the diamond out of the first one and cut out the backing, then bisect it and cut out your yellow and your purple, then cut the R out of the other pattern. You'll need purple, yellow, red, and a backing color; grey is ideal of course.
