(Opening)

ACT 1 <2:38>

(Akiza's dad watches the duel silently, her mom cowering behind him)
Izinski: My little girl...

(Jack and the twins spectate from behind Yusei as the duel continues. Yusei has Shield Warrior on the field in defense mode, between him and a Black Rose Dragon whose thorns have grown even sharper and nastier than usual. Akiza glares at him resentfully.)
Akiza: You're going to regret interfering in my life, Yusei! Because once I remove my Evil Thorn from play, my Dragon's special ability reduces the power of your Warrior, and forces it into attack mode! <3:00> Go, Black Rose Gale!
(Four of Black Rose Dragon's thorny vines ensnare Shield Warrior, forcing him into attack mode and lowering his points to zero. He's now wide-open for a three-thousand-point hit, and so is Yusei.)
Akiza: And now that Shield Warrior is helpless, Black Rose Dragon, attack!!
Yusei: I trigger the "Realize Defense" trap card!
Computer: If a monster that's in attack mode has more defense points than attack points, the "Realize Defense" trap card switches it to defense mode.
(Shield Warrior turns blue again, and breaks the vines that restrain him, switching back to defense mode.)
Yusei: And since my Shield Warrior is a better guard than attacker, I can now make the most out of a *sticky* situation.
Akiza: Don't let that stop you, Black Rose!
(Black Rose Dragon attacks, whipping at Shield Warrior with her vines. Shield Warrior holds them at bay.)
Yusei: But your "Thorn of Malice" equip spell won't let you destroy a monster in battle.
Akiza: That's true, but since my Dragon's attack points are greater than Shield Warrior's defense points, you're still gonna get slammed with damage.
(Part of Shield Warrior's shield snaps off and a piece of debris scratches Yusei across the cheek, leaving a cut that crosses his prison mark. <4:00> Yusei's lifepoints fall to 2300.)

Twins: Yusei!

Akiza: You may have managed to spare Shield Warrior a major thrashing, but the Thorn of Malice still weakens his attack and defense abilities.
(Shield Warrior's defense points are now 1000.)

Luna: Oh no! With Yusei's monster not firing on all cylinders, Akiza's gonna blast away his lifepoints next round!

Akiza: I end my turn. *Don't* think I'm gonna make this quick, Yusei. I'm going to *watch you squirm*.
Yusei: Akiza... Let's *talk* about this. I know you're upset and scared, but... that mark on your arm means that you're not alone. We're all in this thing together.
(Akiza contemptuously glances at her arm, remembering the glow of its Sign.)
Akiza: Don't *bother*, Yusei.
(As she speaks, her anger gives way to sadness and loneliness.)
Akiza: Stop trying to reach me! I *get* it; you're the *good guy*. You like *saving* people. But you can't save *me*. No one can. Not now. Only one person really got me, really tried to help me. Only one person understood what it was like to be me. <5:00> Dad doesn't. You don't. Just Sayer, and he's--

(Flashback. The top levels of the Arcadia Movement headquarters building fill with violent purple smoke, and Sayer falls with the debris through the center space beyond the open walkways of the buildings, groaning with pain, face scratched and battered.)
FB Sayer: Aaa-aaa-aaagh!
FB Akiza: No!!
(Akiza watches helplessly as he plummets into more violet smoke below. End Flashback.)

Akiza: With him missing, there's no place left that I can call home. It's just me. And I don't feel like talking about it!
Yusei: Akiza, you *do* have a home; you've *always* had a home. With your family.
Izinski: That's right, Yusei.
Akiza: Wait-- my *family*?! So you're saying I should go home and play house with those people over there, the ones who sent me away ‘cause they thought I was a monster?! I don't *think* so!
(She removes the power-dampening roller from her hair, and the long bangs that support it fall down around her face. More strong winds spread out from her in waves.)
Akiza: My *real* family is *gone*! There is nowhere left for me!!

(The spectators wince and shield their faces, then Akiza's dad risks opening his eyes.)
Izinski: Akiza--!

(Yusei looks back at him, surprised, then at Akiza.)
Yusei (think): This is bad. The angrier Akiza gets, the stronger her power gets, and the more dangerous the situation is for everyone here-- including her. <6:00>
(The wind dies down again.)
Yusei: It's my move!
(He glances at his card; a spell, Release Restraint Wave.)
Yusei: I reveal my trap-- "Reinforce Truth"! By not battling this turn, I can use this trap card to summon any monster with less than a thousand attack points. I summon Speed Warrior!
[Speed Warrior 900///]
Yusei: And next, I'll bring out my favorite tuner monster-- Junk Synchron!
[Junk Synchron 1300///]

Jack (think): Those three monsters are *useless* against Akiza's dragon... (it hits him) Unless--!

Yusei: I tune Junk Synchron with Shield Warrior and Speed Warrior, in order to synchro-summon-- Stardust Dragon!!
(Junk Synchron revs his little motor, and transforms into three shimmering stars, which revolve once in unison to form three identical green rings. Shield Warrior soars into them and becomes three stars, then Speed Warrior adds its two. They align together at the center of the three rings, and create a stream of bright green-white light...)
Yusei: Let's rev it up!
(Stardust's yellow eyes glint; it spreads its wings to their full extent and fills the air with showers of sparkling lights, roaring. Stardust has taken the field, nose-to-nose with the wicked thorns of Black Rose Dragon.)

Leo: Cool move, but her dragon has more attack points than Stardust. <7:00> So if they duke it out, Stardust Dragon won't survive; and neither will Yusei!

ACT 2 <7:06>

Yusei: Your move, Akiza!
Akiza: So what's your endgame, Yusei? Are you counting on Stardust Dragon to protect you? To protect your *little friends*? Ha! Don't try to fool yourself! You can't *protect* them! And you *certainly* can't save *yourself*! You're gonna make Stardust suffer for nothing! But maybe that's what you *want*, and if that's the case, I'll be more than *happy* to be of service! Starting *right now*. Go forth, my mighty beast! Attack! Slice away at Stardust Dragon!
(It does, whipping Stardust with its vines, leaving burning red cuts in a hundred places. One vine slams into Yusei instead; Yusei's lifepoints fall to 1800.)
Yusei: Aaa-aau-ugh!!
Akiza: Unfortunately for your beast, "Thorn of Malice" prevents me from destroying it, so I get to dish out a world of hurt over and over and over again! <8:00>
(Stardust Dragon is left weaker, with 1900 attack points. A few more vines whip toward the spectators-- Yusei turns, worried-- and are blocked at the last moment by Stardust's wing.)

(They look up from bracing themselves.)
Luna: I don't like her when she's angry!

(Stardust growls defiantly, as though daring her to do her worst.)

Izinski: Akiza, there's no need for this! Please, stop! Let's talk this out!

Akiza: Not a chance, *dad*.
Yusei: It's my turn. From my hand, I'm activating the "Half-Shut" spell card. And with it I can cut the attack points of one monster in half. In exchange, that monster can't be destroyed in battle this turn. And I think I'll choose your Black Rose Dragon!
(Black Rose Dragon's attack points fall to 1500.)

Leo: Oh, yeah! Now his Stardust is more powerful and has the upper hand!
Jack (think): *That's* right, Yusei, you need to get on the offensive!

Yusei: If you *won't* listen to me and your dad, then maybe you'll listen to the power of my deck! Stardust Dragon, attack with Cosmic Flare!
(Stardust attacks; Akiza takes the hit without flinching, down to 3600 lifepoints.) <9:00>
Akiza: Was that little move supposed to *scare* me or something?
Yusei: No, but these two *facedowns* might!
Akiza: You'll need more than that, especially since my dragon gets all of its attack points back now. *This* should be *fun*! Black Rose Dragon, attack his fragile fiend once again!!
(Still cut up from before, Stardust takes another round of vine-whipping, and one of the vines slaps Yusei hard across the face.)
Yusei: Aaaaggghh...!
(Yusei's lifepoints are now 700.)
Akiza: You oughta release Stardust Dragon and put it out of its misery, Yusei. It's only going to experience more pain, as it gets weaker and weaker!
(Stardust's attack points fall further to 1300, glowing scratches marking it all over.)

Izinski (think): Yusei is doing everything he can. He's *trying* to help her, to talk some sense into her; but she won't listen to anyone. I was *right* back then... she *is* a monster...

(Flashback to his being slammed against the wall by a little girl afraid of her own power, and the teenage Akiza walking away into Duel Academy. End Flashback.)

Izinski (think): No... no, what are you *saying*! She's just scared of herself; <10:00> I didn't understand that back then because I was too afraid to be a good father. If she *is* a monster, then I created that monster by turning my back on her!

Akiza: I place one card facedown. Your move, Yusei.
Yusei: Let's do this!
(He glances at his card, Defense Draw, and looks at the Release Restraint Wave spell card already in his hand.)
Yusei (think): Where *is* it?! I can't play the move I want until I get Silver Wing! (aloud) I'm placing one card facedown, and ending my turn!
Akiza: Well. No big attacks? No big speech? What's up? You run outta things to do and say? I thought you were gonna *save* me; given up on me already? Like *everyone else*?!
Yusei: Not a chance. You can try to push me away all you want; but you should know by now that I'll *never* give up on you. I won't do that. That's not me. No matter what happens to me, I *never* give up on my friends!!

(Akiza's parents gasp, as do the twins; Jack watches even more intently.)

Akiza: ... I'm your *friend*?
Yusei: *That's* what I'm trying to show you. <11:00> That's why I won't give up on this duel.
Akiza: You're only saying all this stuff to make me stop. I'm no dummy, I know what you're doing. I'll say I'm sorry, everyone'll hug. And then you'll just ship me off somewhere! Well it's not gonna work! Black Rose Dragon, cripple his decrepit creature! Now attack!!
(Stardust is hit again. A vine goes for Yusei-- )
Akiza: I fell for this 'we're here for you' bit once; right before my dad sent me away.

Izinski: Oh!

Akiza: Remember, dad? Right before you forced me to leave and shipped me off, you told me that you *cared* about me! Well now *Yusei's* gonna pay for your mistakes!!

ACT 3 <11:41>

(Black Rose Dragon's vine whips toward Yusei. At the last minute Akiza's dad runs out onto the field and throws out his arms, trying to shield Yusei.)
Izinski: Stop this, Akiza! Stop hurting people more than you already have!
Yusei: Outta the way!
(Izinski doesn't move, but braces himself--)
Yusei: I activate my trap, "Defense Draw"! And with it, I can stop your Black Rose Dragon's attack!
(A shimmering white barrier appears in front of Akiza's dad and deflects the vine.) <12:00>
Yusei: Next up, I draw one card from my deck.
(Izinski stops bracing himself and looks at her, eyes full of pain.)
Izinski: Sorry, Akiza. I, I wasn't as good a father as I--
Akiza: Save it! It's all too little and too late.
Izinski: I admit it; I was scared of your power. I was scared of *you*.
Akiza: Huh?!
Izinski: I didn't understand your, your *abilities*. You just, you really frightened me.
Akiza: Yeah, I *know* all of this. That's why you decided to get rid of me. You were scared, scared of your little girl.
Izinski: That's right. You had powers I couldn't comprehend and that terrified me. But that's not the only reason. I was disappointed in myself for not being able to deal with you; having you around made me feel powerless. Like a failure. What I'm saying is--
Akiza: So wait a minute! This is about *you* now?!
Izinski: Yes, it's about me letting you down. <13:00> I never stopped caring about you, Akiza. Neither did your mother. You'll always be our little girl--
Akiza: Stop! Just stop talking, dad! No *way* am I falling for this!
Yusei: Akiza!
Akiza: Due to Thorn of Malice's power, your beloved Stardust Dragon loses six hundred more attack points!
(Stardust roars with pain, its points slashed further down to 700.)
Akiza: Now from my hand, I activate the "Wonder Clover" spell. By removing one level-four monster from my hand and sending it to the graveyard, (Lord Poison) I can give one of my monsters the power to attack twice.
Izinski: Akiza, please stop this!
Akiza: Go, Black Rose Dragon! Attack Stardust one more time!! And this time, if my dad gets in the way, then take him out, too!!

Jack (mutters): Yusei'd better do something or his dragon's done for.

Yusei: I activate the "Iron Resolve" trap card! By halving my lifepoints, I can avoid the effect of this attack.
Akiza: Whatever. <14:00> I mean Stardust Dragon's *still* gonna lose more attack points!
(Stardust gets whipped with vines again, shrieking its agony.)
Luna: Look at it, it's... so weak now.
(Izinski looks up at Stardust Dragon, and we see that Yusei's beast is trembling with pain and exhaustion.)
Akiza: Now I reveal my trap card-- "Doom Petal Countdown"! I can channel this card's incredible power, by removing one plant-type monster in my graveyard from play. Then I can use that power to slam you with three hundred points of direct damage!
Yusei (to Izinski): Ya might wanna move, sir!
(Glowing purple petals strike both of them; Yusei's lifepoints are down to a mere 50. The petals are leaving little cuts all over Akiza's dad's suit jacket.)
Akiza: All I have to do is remove one more plant monster from play on my next turn, and you're *finished*, Yusei! Make the most of your next move, ‘cause it'll be your last!
(Akiza's dad sinks to one knee, still being attacked by petals. Yusei realizes that the petals aren't stopping.)
Yusei (think): Huh! She's done makin' her move, but, her power's still going crazy!
(The petals' carrying wind whips Akiza's hair and clothes; she opens her wild eyes.)
Yusei (think): ...Of *course*! She doesn't know how to *control* her power!
(Akiza's dad stands slowly, and tries to walk toward her.) <15:00>
Izinski: Akiza...

Mrs. Izinski: Darling, *no*!
(The twins gasp; Jack is paying close attention.)

(Akiza's dad keeps walking, step by arduous step.)
Izinski: My little girl... Please, give us a second chance! Come home to us, Akiza! Come home to-- (pain) augh!
Akiza: *Stay back*. I'm *not kidding*!!
Yusei: *Move*, sir! You're gonna get hurt!
Izinski: I don't *care*! I don't care if she hurts me! After all, when *she* was hurting I turned my back on her! When she needed me I turned away! I *won't* turn away from her again!
Akiza: That all sounds really sweet, but you don't mean it!
Yusei: He *does*.
Akiza: Huh?!
Yusei: Give ‘im a chance. People deserve second chances. Give your parents the opportunity to show they *care* about you! I mean, take it from me-- in a way, you're actually *really* lucky. You have a *real family*.
Akiza: A real family?
(She looks at her dad, still trying to reach her, and her mom, watching anxiously.)
Akiza: No, I... uh-uh! <16:00>
Yusei: I'm going to prove to you that you're my friend; I'm gonna risk everything to show you that I care. And you won't stop me! (draw, think) Perfect! (aloud) I equip Stardust Dragon with the "Silver Wing" spell card!
(Stardust is still battered with glowing cuts, but its wings are glowing.)
Yusei: Then I activate the spell "Release Restraint Wave"!
Akiza: What're you going to do with that?!
Yusei: I'm gonna harness this spell's energy by destroying one equip spell on my field! Now I've got the power to destroy every spell and trap card you have in play!
Akiza: Huh?!
(She turns; Black Rose Dragon's extra thorns glow and vanish.)
Akiza: My "Thorn of Malice"... !
Yusei: -- Is history, and since Black Rose Dragon was getting its special powers from that trap, *both* of our dragons' attack points return to normal!
(Black Rose's go back to 2400, Stardust's rise back to 2500.)
Akiza: No way!
Yusei: *Yes* way! Now, Stardust Dragon, attack Black Rose Dragon! Go, Cosmic Flare!!
(Black Rose Dragon is destroyed in a massive fireball. <17:00> Akiza's lifepoints fall to 3500. The crazy purple petals are still blowing through the air.)
Akiza: From my hand, I activate the effect of Hedge Guard. By sending this card to the graveyard, I can protect one monster from being destroyed.
(Black Rose Dragon reappears.)
Akiza: Nice try, Yusei-- but you *had* your chance! It's time I end this once and for all!!
(The petals are still blowing through the air, and everyone is shielding their faces; but even as he does, Yusei's eyes are fixed on Akiza... )

ACT 4 <17:22>

Akiza: It's time for me to *end* this charade! You don't care about me and neither does my father! Sayer's the only one who ever understood me, and now he's vanished from my life just like everyone else has!
(Black Rose Dragon's attack points decrease to 1200.)
Izinski: Akiza!
Akiza: Dad, don't. Get back...
(She suddenly feels small, at the center of a maelstrom of tiny petals raging through every corner of the room.)
Akiza: I- can't stop it! My powers won't *listen* to me!
Izinski (getting cut): Aaaa-aagh!
Akiza: Stop it!! I don't wanna do this anymore!!
(Suddenly, blown by the violent winds, a large box, crate, maybe a computer, comes flying at Akiza's dad.)
Izinski: Aaaah!
Akiza: *Daddy*! No!!
(She reaches out a hand and clenches her fist, as though to pull the object back to her with an invisible line. He ducks, bracing for the impact. Mere feet short of dad, it stops in midair and drops to the ground. The petals are gone. Everyone looks at Akiza, as she stands with her arm still outstretched and a look of bewilderment on her face.) <18:00>
Yusei: Huh?
Akiza: I- did it...! I was able to control my power!
Izinski: Akiza... ugh...
(He falls to his knees on the floor, spent.)
Akiza: Huh?!
(Akiza runs forward to meet him, and kneels.)
Akiza: Daddy... !
(He looks up at her.)
Izinski: I'm sorry.
(She nods, then looks at Yusei, resolute. They're still in the middle of a duel. Yusei calmly returns her gaze.)
Akiza: Yusei, please; finish this. End this duel. I don't wanna fight anymore.
Yusei (nod): I'm doing this only ‘cause you asked me to, Akiza; now if my Dragon can't destroy your monster, the "Synchro Ring" trap card doubles its attack points and gives it the ability to attack again!
(Stardust's points rise to 5000. Akiza stands, supporting her dad. She nods at Yusei; Yusei nods back.) <19:00>
Yusei: The curse of the Black Rose ends now! Stardust Dragon, take out Akiza's beast with Cosmic Flare!
(Black Rose Dragon is destroyed. Akiza hugs her dad, contented, as her lifepoints drop to zero.)

(A bright white flash, and Akiza is waking up in her dad's arms; she must've fainted.)
Izinski: Akiza... please, wake up.
Akiza: ... Daddy?
(She smiles weakly, and tears form in her eyes)
Akiza: I missed you.
(He hugs her close.)
Izinski: I'm so sorry, Akiza. I should've never been afraid of you. I should've realized that you were just as frightened. I should've held you and comforted you, but I didn't. Let me start making up for that right now.
Akiza: Thank you, dad, but, you sure you want me home? I mean, I...
(She pulls away to look him in the face.)
Akiza: I was *very mean*. <20:00> I hurt you and mom and everyone else I ever knew--
Yusei: Akiza.
Akiza: Huh?
Yusei: Listen... You and your parents have a lot of catching up to do. But we Signers could really use you around, too. Whaddaya say? Will you fight with us? Will you take a stand alongside your friends?
(Akiza sighs, the tears flowing down her cheeks.)
Akiza: You got it, Yusei. (adds, to her dad) If that's okay?
(Yusei smiles. Akiza's dad is crying too.)
Izinski: Of course.
(Akiza's mom starts crying for joy. Leo jumps up and cheers; Jack and Luna are smiling.)
Leo: Yahoo!
Luna: Awesome!
(The twins run over to join them.)
Leo: See, Akiza? It's just like Yusei said! We're all bound by our marks! E-except mine hasn't appeared yet.
(For the first time, the four Signers stand together, as others Signed have for millennia.)
Yusei (rolls up his sleeve): It's true. These marks connect us, all of us. We share a destiny. So like it or not, we're friends.
(Akiza laughs a bit and looks up at Yusei; Luna and Jack hear this pronouncement, too. Hope is beginning to show in each of their eyes. Yusei pauses, then nods approvingly, perhaps sensing the shift in tone.)
Akiza (looks away): That's sweet, but... <21:00> I've had friends before, and that didn't turn out so well for them.

(Flashback. She remembers Sayer's reassuring smile, the first person to care about the person behind the Black Rose's mask. End Flashback.)

Akiza: I mean... losing people you care about really hurts...
(She closes her eyes against tears.)
Yusei: Yeah, I know exactly what you mean, Akiza. I ran into an old friend the other day, and well, let's just say he's *changed.*

(Flashback. He remembers the confident smile of his best friend Kalin, leader of the Enforcers. End Flashback.)

Yusei: We all lose people in different ways, but... I don't know. We just have to keep going. I know it's scary to trust new people, but... Akiza, I'm asking you to trust me, to call me a friend.
Akiza: ... I'll try.
(The twins are happy; Jack seems amused.)
Yusei (think): I know that together, we can defeat the Dark Signers and save our homes!
